Introduction to Accounting: Lesson 1

Welcome to Introduction to Accounting! This course is designed to provide you with a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental principles of accounting. No prior experience is needed and it’s actually great if you don’t have any.

In this course, you will gain a basic understanding of the principles of accounting, including the basic accounting equation, debits and credits, T accounts, normal account balances, and journal entries. By the end of this course, you will have the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to analyze, interpret, and communicate financial information.

Accounting can be traced back thousands of years to ancient civilizations such as the Mesopotamians, Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. It is so important that it is still being taught and developed today. While there have been some changes over the years, accounting is likely to remain an important and influential field for many years to come. It’s not something that AI will replace overnight and having good accounting skills is the backbone to running many successful businesses. 

There are many paths you can take in accounting such as a public accountant, private accountant or business owner but each needs to learn the fundamental skills of accounting. That is what we will cover in this short accounting basics course, for free!

While this course will get you introduced to the accounting basics, it is not comprehensive of accounting as a whole. That said, it will put you in a good spot to build off these foundational building blocks and accounting knowledge.

You will have a solid understanding of the basic accounting equation, debits and credits, T accounts, normal account balances, and journal entries. You will be able to apply basic accounting skills and understand basic financial records. You’ll be prepared to continue your studies in accounting or apply your knowledge to your personal or professional life.
